Updates to Login.gov’s Program Policy
Government agencies continue to face an evolving and increasingly sophisticated fraud landscape, creating risks for government programs and for the individuals they serve. We’ve heard from many of you that one of the reasons you rely on Login.gov is to help strengthen protections against fraudulent access, improper use of government services, and identity-related harm to legitimate users.
Over the past several years, partners have also shared that additional clarity and support are needed to help agencies prevent, detect, investigate, and respond to suspected fraud.
In response to that feedback, Login.gov has implemented enhanced anti-fraud capabilities and we are updating our privacy documentation to describe them. These updates provide greater transparency about how certain account creation, verification attempts, and anti-fraud evidence is retained and, where authorized agreements are in place, shared with partner agencies in support of fraud prevention and investigation. We anticipate these updates taking effect this week.
At a high level, the updated documentation describes a defined retention period for certain identity verification information and controlled sharing of that information with authorized partner agencies for approved anti-fraud purposes. Any retention or sharing will continue to be subject to appropriate agreements, controls, and agency handling requirements. Login.gov’s commitment to privacy and security remains unchanged. We will continue to apply strong technical, contractual, and governance controls to ensure information is used only for authorized purposes.
Thank you to the many partners who have provided feedback on the data, tooling, and policy support needed to strengthen anti-fraud operations across government. We appreciate your continued collaboration as we work together to protect government services and the public from fraud.
America.gov sign-in experience powered by Login.gov
Login.gov is enthusiastically working to support the upcoming sign-in experience for America.gov, helping provide a secure and familiar way for the public to access government services, starting with U.S. passport applications.
As this work progresses, we’ll be sharing lessons learned, including insights on user experience, technical integration, operational readiness, and cross-agency coordination. These lessons will help inform how future use cases can be evaluated and adopted into the America.gov sign-in experience with Login.gov. We look forward to continuing to work with partners to identify these opportunities to improve access to government services while maintaining Login.gov’s standards for security, privacy, and reliability.
UI refresh collaboration with NDS is making progress
Login.gov’s collaboration with the National Design Studio (ND Studio) to improve the Login.gov user experience has continued to progress. The teams are preparing for the first full implementation of the new look in the upcoming America.gov - Department of State passport application.
We will also soon begin limited A/B testing to evaluate the effectiveness of the updated design at a wider range of partner agencies in our network. During the testing phase, a small percentage of users randomized across applications will experience the new design, while the vast majority of others will see the current look-and-feel. The core workflow steps (such as sign-in and identity verification) are not changing. As a reminder, we also created a preview on our website to help alleviate any user confusion.
We are also planning to provide partners with new screenshots of the refreshed UI/flow so you have materials to update your support documentation as needed.
New partner support website is live
We’ve launched the refreshed Login.gov Partner website (partners.login.gov) to make it easier for partners to find the information and support they need. The new site integrates with our partner support ticketing system and includes updated knowledge base articles. Before submitting a ticket, partners can use the search feature to quickly look for answers to common questions and explore available guidance.
Partners should now submit all support tickets through the “Contact us” page on the Login.gov Partner website. Please note that our old url (zendesk-dot-login-dot-gov) is no longer in use. This includes requests to launch new applications, which still require two weeks’ advance notice before moving into production.
We’re also inviting partners to test the new website and share feedback. Your input will help us understand what’s most useful, what could be easier to find, and other improvements. Interested in participating? Email partners@login.gov.
Partner Portal update: New role makes sharing reports easier
We recently launched the new “Read Only” role for Team Reports in the Login.gov Partner Portal. Now, Production Team Admins can grant reporting access to team members who need to view key reports but don’t require configuration permissions—making collaboration easier and more secure. As we continue to grow, this is another step toward delivering a scalable, intuitive platform that evolves based on partners’ needs. If your agency has not yet migrated and you are interested in transitioning to the new Partner Portal, please contact our team at partners@login.gov.
